Description

Product Description

A gorgeously illustrated introduction to poetry for children, featuring poems about everything from science, sports, and space, to friendship, family, and feelings.

This thoughtfully crafted anthology is perfect for children new to verse and for young poetry fans seeking out new favorites. Explore poetry from a diverse selection of contemporary and historical poets, covering a broad range of topics—from personal subjects like emotions and family, to the wonders of the natural environment. Carefully selected works encourage children to see the poetry in everything and to embrace the beauty of their everyday lives.

Prompts and activities inspire children to create their own poetry, and devices like rhyme, repetition, and alliteration are introduced and explained in a fun and accessible manner.

The poems and illustrations are unique and fun. Unfortunately most of the poems are not rhyming and didn''t work for my purposes.

Children are a lot smarter than this collection of poems. I have taught most elementary grades and would not use this for any grade higher than maybe kindergarten, and then only as starter ideas for our own poems. Kindergarteners have more profound feelings.

The use of cliche does not stand in the place of meaning:

Although by Tony Langham
"Although
I had

butterflies
in my
stomach

and ants
in my pants

(...)

I had
a whale
of a time."

Seriously? Children are more profound than that.

Don''t talk down to children. Talk to them about ideas. They will reach up to you.

A poem that exemplifies this flaw is "How toLove Your Little Corner of the World" by Eileen Spinelli:

"Help a neighbor.
Plant a tree.
Hug your friends
and family.
(...)
Share a book.
Take a walk.
Someone''s lonely?
Stop and talk."

This poem also talks down to children. How many times do we teach poetry to children and tell them to be specific and to name names and feelings?

I always look forward to a DK book. I found this profoundly disappointing.

"A World Full of Poems" is another wonderful DK book.

The poems are divided into sections based on subject matter: Family and Friends; Feelings; Animals and Nature; Cities, Towns, and Travel; Fun and Games; Science and Art; Body and Health; and A World of Learning.

The poems include some well-known ones, such as one of my favorites from when I was a kid: “My Shadow” by Robert Louis Stevenson. There are fun illustrations - not on every page but enough to keep it fun.

Some of the authors are recognizable, such as Lewis Carroll, Emily Dickinson, and Li Po. There are more modern authors such as Janet Wong and Linda Sue Park.

The pages are laid out with plenty of white space – perfect for poetry, where the pauses and spaces are just as important as the words.

The pages are thick and feel like quality paper. There''s even a ribbon bookmark, which makes the volume feel special.

There are poetry activities at the end, which is really nice to encourage kids to apply their own skills. There’s Reading aloud, Acting it out, Poem treasure hunt, Sharing opinions, Starting to write, Styles to try, Turn your poem into art, and Getting better as a poet. These activities help kids to think creatively.

There are also a glossary and indexes. The indexes are sorted by poets, name of the poem, and topics. That makes it easy to find a specific poem.

Overall, this is a wonderful volume to add to a child''s library.

About the Book: I fell in love with DK’s A World Full of Poems as soon as it came out of the envelope. The gorgeous cover art fits perfectly with the interior illustrations and poetry. As a large hardcover book, it feels sturdy and should last many years with proper care. The built-in bookmark adds a convenient perk.

About the Poems: In DK’s A World Full of Poems, Sylvia M. Vardell selected diverse topics and styles of poems. Though the poetic forms vary, the poems are grouped into eight themed sections: Family and Friends; Feelings; Animals and Nature; Cities, Towns, and Travel; Fun and Games; Science and Art; Body and Health; A World of Learning.

In the section on feelings, I liked that the poems validate negative emotions, but do not promote releasing such emotions in negative ways. In fact, many of the poems encouraged children to help others and cultivate kindness. I also liked that poems suitable for physical movement were included. Though only one included movement directions, there were others that lend themselves to physical actions.

I think A World Full of Poems is suited best to elementary age children and younger. Most of the poems are simple and fun, designed to cultivate a love of poetry in a child. A few higher-level poems by well-known authors (Emily Dickinson, Robert Louis Stevenson, Lewis Carroll) pepper throughout the book.

Like many of the poems, the illustrations by Sonny Ross tended toward simplicity. However, bright colors fill the pages and my kiddos enjoyed paging through this book. We have read and discussed several poems together and the girls were very attentive. I am looking forward to integrating this book into our homeschool curriculum.

Final Thoughts: The DK A World Full of Poems: Inspiring Poetry for Children compiled by Sylvia M. Vardell makes an amazing introduction to poetry for younger children. Five stars!

This book of poetry is beautiful and thick, the kind that adults give to their children with beautiful little notes wishing them a lifetime of happiness. Childlike and inspiring art is printed throughout the pages and compliment the poems that they share a page on. The poems spark inspiration for writing yourself, even as an adult. This book contains different types of poetry and topics that relate to the day to day lives of children. They even provide an opening to bigger topics to be discussed with your children as they grow up.

There is a guide in the back for writing your own poetry and places where you can keep the poetry you are proud of or that you have enjoyed from other poets (such as a copy in your car or backpack for inspiration). There were some poems I read in the book that I copied as well as I think there is a little bit of your childhood you re-live as you read over these poems. Not every poem is simple and not ever poem is deep; it provides a decent amount of different poems that you can then check at the back to see if it is something you want to take further with your kids. Maybe you can make a game or a discussion out of a particular poem you read. I think this book would make a wonderful gift to be cherished in the future. It is a great value for the cost, I would recommend it.
